Independent medical examination
THE DOCTORS ARE NOT INDEPENDENT
The doctors are selected and paid by the insurance companies. They have the incentive to minimize your injuries and provide an opinion that is favorable for the insurance company when going to your IME appointment. As a patient, you should protect yourself and your right to continue your medical treatment. Below are some examples of question that are not related to your injury but are often used by doctors to collect personal information about you and thus use in their reports to the insurance companies to deny or request for medical treatment:
(I) Have you taken a vacation recently?
(II) How was your vacation?
(III) How did you come to the appointment today?
(IV) Did you drive yourself?
(V) Are you working today?
Such questions sound friendly and straightforward; however, these are ways the INDEPENDENT doctors retrieve information for the insurance company report.
If you are scheduled for IME examination refrain respond questions NOT related to your pain and suffering. The IME doctors are not your friend!
EXAMINATION DOCTORS ARE USED TO DENY CLAIMS
If an insurance company has requested an IME, they are usually looking for a way to extinguish your benefits and consequently your claim. Dishonest IME decisions can be devastating for people hurt by the negligence of others.
